Amazon Expands Healthcare with $3.9 Billion Hospital Acquisition
Amazon has agreed to acquire a major U.S. hospital network in a $3.9 billion deal, marking the company's most significant move yet into the healthcare sector. The acquisition, which is subject to regulatory approval, would give Amazon direct control over 47 hospitals and over 200 outpatient facilities across 12 states.
The deal follows Amazon's 2022 acquisition of One Medical and its ongoing investment in pharmacy, telehealth, and health insurance. Together, these assets would position Amazon as a vertically integrated healthcare provider capable of serving patients from initial symptom search through diagnosis, treatment, and prescription fulfillment.
Regulatory Hurdles Ahead
Antitrust regulators are expected to scrutinize the deal carefully, given Amazon's scale and its existing presence in adjacent healthcare markets. The FTC has been increasingly active in reviewing large technology company acquisitions in recent years.
